Team Korea emerged victorious in the PUBG Nations Cup, securing their first-ever win at the Sangam Afreeca Colosseum in Seoul on Sunday.

This win holds special significance for Team Korea, with it coming four years after a near-miss at the same tournament.

The PUBG Nations Cup is a premier Esports event that draws 16 top-tier teams to compete in Player Unknown��s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

In this high-stakes player-versus-player shooter game, up to 100 participants vie for survival in an intense battle, after being dropped out of a plane.

Kicking off the event on Friday, Team Korea set the stage alight from the get-go, consistently delivering strong performances. The team, comprising of players Cho Gi-yeol, Park Jung-young, Na Hee-joo, and Kim Tae-sung and guided by coach Shin Myong-gwan, notched up 49 points on the inaugural day, placing them in fourth spot. They further upped their game the following day, amassing 58 points and claiming the top position.

The nail-biting finale witnessed Team Korea maintaining their position. In the 14th match, they stood out by ensuring all four of their players remained until the end. In a defining moment, they eliminated all four players from Team Thailand.

With an impressive tally of 172 points, Team Korea clinched the prestigious Nations Cup title. Cho Gi-yeol’s outstanding performance, boasting 34 kills and a staggering 7,208 damage, earned him the MVP accolade for the tournament.

Defending champs, Team United Kingdom, had to settle for the second spot with 140 points, narrowly followed by Vietnam with 139 points. Argentina secured the fourth position with a total of 133 points.

This victory has provided Team Korea with a moment of redemption. In the 2019 edition, they faltered on the final day, relinquishing their leading position and allowing Russia to be crowned champions.

This latest triumph marks a significant achievement for Korean PUBG, as it’s the first international title clinched by a Korean team since 2019 �C the previous honor being the 2019 PUBG Global Championship, bagged by Gen. G.

The PUBG Nations Cup victory came with a hefty cash prize, with Team Korea pocketing $100,000 from the event’s total prize pool of $300,000.

Australian esports teams to merge in surprise decision

Two of Australia’s premier esports teams are set to merge, following careful deliberation from the outfits.

It was revealed over the weekend that Team Bliss had acquired fellow Aussie outfit The Chiefs Esports Club, in a move that will increase the exposure of both on the international stage.

While the two teams will merge and share resources, both will continue to operate as individual brands, keeping both Team Bliss and The Chiefs names active.

��We couldn��t be more excited about what this merger means for the future of Oceanic esports,” Chief Operating Officer of Team Bliss Brendan Harms said.

What is surprising about the merger, is that Team Bliss is the newer entity, having only launched in 2019 while their more senior partner began in 2014 and has had more success globally.

Team Bliss has steadily built its name on the regional esports scene, especially with notable successes in PUBG and Rainbow Six: Siege. By 2023, the team marked its presence in the League of Legends Circuit Oceania (LCO).

On the other hand, The Chiefs’ League of Legends squad clinched victory at the LCO Split 2 in June.

Both teams said discussions about the merger had been ongoing and that they had nurtured a professional relationship over the past year. Their collaboration was evident when they jointly worked with Logitech G for the debut of the Logitech G Pro X2 headset.

While the details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, both parties mentioned that future plans regarding teams or titles to compete in are still under discussion.

In the wake of the merger, Nick Bobir, who held the dual roles of Managing Director for The Chiefs and CEO of ICON ESPORTS (which had acquired The Chiefs in 2021), has resigned.

To ensure a smooth transition, Chris Smith, founder of Business in Games and BIGR AI, has stepped in as an advisor. He aims to provide insights for commercialisation and drive growth over the next two years. Additionally, Mat Jessep from Game Legal will collaborate with the newly merged entity to guarantee its flourishing future.

Indian esports stakeholders react to BGMI’s return to India

On Thursday, PUBG: Battlegrounds developer Krafton announced the return of its Indian-focused version Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) to the Indian market.

The battle royale game was taken off Google Play Store and the Apple App Store last year, allegedly as a result of the developer’s relations with Chinese company Tencent.

In a release, Krafton revealed that it had reached an agreement with the government of India and was set to relaunch BGMI. The game will undergo a three-month trial period, after which the government will decide if BGMI will remain in the Indian market.

Krafton did not reveal the release date for the battle royale game; however, fans can expect an update in the near future.

Hyunil Sohn, Krafton’s CEO, expressed his gratitude to the Indian government for allowing them to relaunch BGMI. He also thanked the Indian gaming community for their continued patience and support.

“We are excited to announce that BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE INDIA will be available for download soon and we cannot wait to welcome you back to our platform. We believe in the power of gaming to bring people together and create unforgettable experiences,” Sohn continued.

BGMI was initially released in India in 2021, shortly after the government banned the original game in the country.

Several stakeholders in the Indian gaming and esports industry, including 8Bit Creatives, The Esports Federation of India, Loco, and several others, have all released statements concerning BGMI’s imminent relaunch.

8Bit Creatives, representing several BGMI content creators, revealed they were pleased with the game’s return. The group’s CEO Animesh Agarwal stated that it would “infuse new energy into the Indian gaming industry.”

Loco, via its founders Ashwin Suresh and Anirudh Pandita, asserted that the return of BGMI would lead to innovative, collaborative, and community-building relationships within the Indian esports ecosystem. They also said that it would strengthen India’s position as a place with a thriving gaming and esports industry for gamers.

“With BGMI’s comeback, content creators, streamers, and esports professionals will be presented with fresh avenues to connect with their audience and showcase their talents in the competitive realm,” the founders opined.

“We can also expect a significant rise in user engagement, esports viewership, and revenue generation opportunities with this re-entry.”

The Director of the Esports Federation of India, Lokesh Suji, extended his appreciation to the Indian government for allowing the game’s return. He also said with the government’s recent acknowledgment that the country’s esports sector would likely experience exponential growth in the coming years.

The Esports Club also expressed its excitement at having BGMI back and revealed that it looked forward to seeing its effects on players, teams, and fans within the country’s esports community.

Ishaan Arya, the club’s co-founder, said, “It’s an interesting step to see a trial period, where they will work with the government to ensure all compliance while the game is live. It shows Krafton’s willingness to work with the government and make sure everything is done right for the Indian market once and for all.”

SuperGaming’s co-founder Roby John stated that he hoped BGMI’s return pushed Indian talent towards a vastly improved games industry in terms of esports, content creation, and game development.

“We’re glad it’s coming back, gaming should be without boundaries. It’s yet another signal that gaming and esports are the biggest opportunities in India and now, it comes with the recognition of the government as well,” John added.

Indian esports organizations such as Sky Esports, Revenant Esports, Global Esports, Villager Esports, and Reckoning Esports all released statements expressing their delight at BGMI’s return.
